Dr Balow is clinical director at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He is also chief of the Kidney Disease Section at NIDDK and professor of medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr Balow received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed his residency at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC, where he also served as a fellow in nephrology.

Dr Balow has received the Distinguished Clinical Educator Award and two director’s awards from the NIIH. He is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, the American Association of Immunologists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Society of Nephrology, and the Renal Pathology Society. He is a frequently invited lecturer and faculty member at national and international nephrology and rheumatology meetings and symposia.

Dr Balow has published more than 170 articles in such publications as the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the Annals of Internal Medicine. He is the author of 64 book chapters and serves on the editorial board of Clinical Nephrology.
