Dr Contreras is director of the acute dialysis unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, and associate professor of clinical medicine in the division of nephrology and hypertension at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He received his MD from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico, and completed his residency at Harlem Hospital Center in New York. He earned a master’s degree in public health at the University of Miami School of Medicine.
Dr Contreras has been principal or co-principal investigator for studies funded by, among others, the National Institutes of Health, the Kidney Foundation of South Florida, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Critical Care Medicine, the National Kidney Foundation, and the European Dialysis and Transplantation Association.
Dr Contreras has published more than 60 articles and abstracts in such journals as the Archives of Internal Medicine, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the American Journal of Kidney Diseases. He is co-author of 2 books in nephrology.
